Introduction to Audio Engineering
Tuition: $650
This is a hands-on course
designed to introduce and familiarize the student with studio equipment
and the process of recording music. The class meets three hours once a
week for ten weeks. At the end of the class, students will receive a certificate
of completion along with a CD of material they recorded and mixed during
the course.
Course Overview
Week 1: The Console
The console will be broken
down into its various sections and then each section reviewed individually.
The student will learn the basic functions of the various controls with
an emphasis on how signal flows through the console.
Week 2: Recording Formats
This class will begin with
a brief discussion about magnetic recording and how it works. The students
will then learn about the differences between analog and digital recording
as well as the pros and cons of each. Next will be a discussion of hard
disk based recording and editing systems.
Week 3: Frequency -Based
Processing
The various types of equalizers
and filters will be covered as well as when to use each type. The students
will then get hands-on instruction on how to use equalizers effectively.
Week 4: Dynamic Processing
The students will learn
what dynamic processors do, the various types of dynamics processors and
where they are commonly placed in the signal chain. The students will then
get hands-on instruction on how to use the various types of processors
effectively.
Week 5: Time-Based Processing
The various types of time-based
processors will be discussed along with their most common uses and placement
in the signal chain. The students will then have the opportunity to use
some of these processors to discover how to use them effectively.
Week 6: Microphones
Design principles of microphones
and their polar patterns will be followed by a discussion on choosing the
right mic for a given application. The students will then be instructed
on proper mic placement for common musical instruments.
Week 7: Recording Session
Students will apply their
knowledge in a simple recording session of a vocalist with accompanist.
Week 8: Mixdown and Editing
Students will be instructed
on mixdown and editing procedures. The students will then mix and edit
the material from the previous week's class.
Week 9: Recording Session
Students will apply their
knowledge in a more complex recording session consisting of a full band.
Week 10: Mixdown and Editing
Students will mix and edit
the material from the previous week's class. The student will then receive
a compact disc of the material they recorded and mixed during the course
along with a certificate of completion.
